INFORMATION :
This fort is located in the Pune district of Maharashtra. This is the first fort conquered by the great Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1647 when he was 16 year old. The fort has its special image as it was the fort from where the Maratha Emperor started its emergence in Maharashtra. This fort is about 1403 ft above the sea level making this fort one of the highest forts in the district. A Menghai Devi temple, also referred to as the Tornaji temple, is situated near the entrance of the fort. Torna gad was then named as Prachandagad as this is one of the highest known as Prachanda and fort means Gad.
HISTORY :
This fort is constructed by the Shaiva Panth, followers of the Hindu god Shiva, in the 13th century. The Fort was Capture by Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1643 when Raje was just 15 years old. This was the first fort Capture by Shivaji Maharaj from where the Maratha Empire Started the journey. Torna killa was capture by Mughals in 18 century. But it was restored to the Marathas under the treaty of Purandar.
The Torna fort trek is a major destination for the trekkers during the winter’s. Trekkers also stay at Menghai devi temple at night while making it a 2 day trek.
