The Pandavleni Caves were excavated during the Satavahana dynasty’s reign and were utilized as Buddhist viharas (monasteries) and chaityas (prayer halls). The caves are named after the Pandavas from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, as there is a local belief that they stayed here during their exile.

The Pandavleni Caves are among the oldest Buddhist caves in Maharashtra and are considered to be contemporary to the famous Ajanta and Ellora Caves.
Cave 3, also known as the “Siddhartha Cave,” is the most significant cave and features a large stupa, indicating its importance as a chaitya.
