DARJEELING INFORMATION & HISTORY

The Darjeeling hill station is one of the beautiful hill stations located in the west part of the Country in the Indian State of West bengal. The beautiful sunrise and sunset and the beauty of the hills and beautiful climate makes this place one of the beautiful hill stations to visit in India. This city is famous for its Tea production and also gives the view of the World’s Third highest mountain kanchenjunga. It is a perfect destination for the honeymoon with its beautiful scenic view. This Hill station, one of the beautiful hill stations is also known as “Queen of Himalaya”.

The Word Darjeeling is derived from the Tibet word “Dorje” which means “ The land of the thunderbolt”. Until the 19th century the region was under the control of the Kingdom of Sikkim and was also a part of Nepal. But further in 1829 a dispute broke out between Nepal and Sikkim regarding their border. Therefore lord William Bentrick Governor general of India decided to resolve this dispute. He decided that this place is suitable for the Medical health of the British soldier, Trade and military outpost. 

Further it was declared that the land was ideal for Tea plantation.This region underwent many major and small developments and after that by the British and then it was one of the major tourist attractions were british officials used to visit.Therefore the British gave the Title of “Queen of Hills” to this region. But after independence the region was merged with the west bengal and since then it is one of most beautiful hill stations in India.

Best time to visit the destination is between the months of October to July. The major attraction of this hill station is the toy train “ Darjeeling Himalayan Railway ‘”.

Which goes around the hills of himalayas and gives you a beauty and breathtaking views. The hill station is also famous for tea plantations and one of the major tea exporters in the country.
